They could randomly think about that person while doing a common task, like washing your clothes. Or you could think about them as your talking with someone and they do something that makes you remember them. For me, the most influential person I met was a homeless man that I met at the mall. Almost a year ago, I had the pleasure of befriending someone who was homeless. However, I had no idea that he was. All I knew about him was that everyday, he ordered something from Starbucks and sat down for a few hours in the food court. He didnt have a phone and no one came to talk to him. He always wore layers of clothes even if it was hot outside and humid inside. I tended to notice him every time I was at the mall. When I started working there I noticed him even more. He always wore the same jacket which was zipped all the way up and smiled at everyone who would look at him. One day, we were both waiting in line at Starbucks. He was in front of me and I was behind him. While he was in line, he looked at me, smiled, and asked me what I was going to order. I told him and he responded with what he usually orders. When it is his turn to order, not only does he order his drink, but he orders mine as well. I offer to pay but by the time I had my money out, he had already paid for it and collected his receipt. I politely asked why he paid for my drink and he responded with a shug and said Sometimes its nice to make other people smile. When we got the coffee I decided to sit with him for a few minutes until my break was over. He asked basic questions about myself and I asked him basic questions back. It didnt feel awkward or uncomfortable in any way. It just felt like I was making a new friend and learning about his experiences. Finally, out of the blue, in the middle of a comfortable silence, he explains to me that he didnt have a home to go to when the mall closed. He also told me that he served in the U.S. Army for almost ten years. His wife could not handle him being away for so long and eventually divorced him. He came home to an empty house and after a few years of living on his own and trying to keep up with all of his bills, his house eventually foreclosed. He told be that he was homeless for almost two years. He later told me that the reason he comes to the mall so often was because his ex-wife used to loved to go to the mall and he feels that if he goes there everyday, there could be a chance that he coul d see her one more time. We had that conversation two years ago. That was the only time we had a deep conversation together. Now, if we do sit down and have a conversation, it is only for a few minutes and usually consists of him telling me about the people he sees in the mall or me briefly telling him about the day I had. I bought him new clothes for him to wear and occasionally he still buys both of us Starbucks. Even though times arent the best for him, he still takes the time out of his day to listen to someone elses problems as well as do good deeds for them. I still have yet to learn his name, not because I am afraid to ask but mostly because I feel like I have known him for so long that I dont feel the need to ask him for it.

Media’s Effect on Society Mass media has been the greatest source of entertainment and communication in history, and even greater with the explosion of new technology. It is defined as the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazine that reach or influence people widely. It is a huge part of our everyday lives; we see media everywhere, and we know the latest news and trends right away because of this. It is attributed, according to Denis McQuail in his book Mass Communication and Society, to â€Å"influence opinion and belief, change habits of life, and actively mold behavior.† Unfortunately, media affects the public in a way that it could control what a person does or thinks. Now parents seem hopeful that their children will make the right decision, but the only problem is that they are wrongly told of what is agreeable to most people because of suggestive media. May this be as a result of what the research say that there is too much sex on television; teens are getting the wrong impression and are not aware of what they are responsible for. All the foul languages and misleading acts portrayed by television highly influence its audiences especially the young ones. Other than affecting morality, media also provokes danger to society. As our times modernize many people get to experience the ease of technology. One example is the accessible communication between the communities, like social networking sites. As most people, hundreds of millions of people are now active users of Facebook and Twitter. This medium definitely attracts danger to users by sharing of information, scams, and even cyber bullying. Question: What is Human resources management? Explain. Answer: Reflective journal Human resources management is the significant function that manages the resources of the organization. The operation is designed to increase the performance level of the employee. The study of human resources fascinated me because seldom people acknowledge the significance of human resources in a company. Human resources management of Australian organizations involves the aspect of constructing workforce to accelerate the performance level of the institution (Brewster and Mayrhofer 2012). The course that I attended inculcated strong interpretation on employment policies and regulation and the recruitment activities. The organization I am working with frequently confronts the problem retaining the employees for a longer time. According to the survey conducted on the organization, the company exempted 58 percentile of employee left their job voluntarily and only 20 percentile of employee. To resolve this issue I as a human resources manager of the organization suggested an improvised p lan for recruitment. The organization followed traditional method of hiring that is not relevant to access the knowledge and skills of the employee and as a result, they end up hiring unsuitable candidates. I attended a lecture on organizational restructure that guided me to understand that an organization is dependent on the performances of the employee. In the meeting, I proposed my recommendation with the help of presentation. Some of the board members thought that the procedure was time consuming and many accepted that the change was necessary. We all argued and talked about the matter and at the end of the meeting; I understood the vitality of meetings in an organization. The discussions that took place helped me to understand the effectiveness of internal communication activities of the enterprise. Human resources management of an organization ponders on the decisions related to the operational and technical fields (Warner 2013). I understood the importance of strategic decisi on making in an organization when our organization suffered a financial loss while manufacture procedure of a new product failed to meet its fulfillment. The company suffered a huge loss. Nevertheless, as a human resources a manager I made propositions to manage the financial loss by cutting off miscellaneous spending and holding down increments of the employees. It was a tough decision to take in my part because increment is right of the hardworking employees. We discussed the matter over a board meeting and the decision had to be taken as the company was running on loss. Strategic decision making is important in organizations as it keeps on check the growth of the organization and the welfare of the employees. My decision as the human resources manager may have opposed a deserving from getting his increment however it helped the company to retain employees rather than exempting them for the loss. According to Jackson, Schuler and Jiang 2014, there are sex discrimination act, racial discrimination act and human right discrimination act are the legal stature that an organization have to follow. Reflective journal Recruitment and selection procedure is a set of significant decision that the human resources department of an organization has to take for the growth and establishment of the organization (Taylor 2014). Attending the courses marketing management course truly helped me to understand how selection and recruitment procedure takes place in an organization. According to Shackleton 2015, human resources department should be supportive and supply necessary assistance to the organization by hiring capable and competent candidate. While studying MBA is came to know that first step of hiring involves sourcing candidates. Applications from suitable are accumulated. We advertise about our job opening in local newspapers and websites so that we can get in touch with the potent candidates. Social networks, trading association and career sites can be reliable places where advertisements can be posted. Once we were urgently searching some potential candidates for the role of technical support. We d id not get so much of response from publishing advertisement in newspapers. The department of human resources took a decision to advertise their news in social networking sites and career related sites. The idea worked and we got many candidates who were willing to work with our organization. Tracking or ATS is also a necessary phase where we review the resumes of the candidates and choose them according to the vacancy available in the organization (Kundu Rattan, Sheera and Gahlawat 2015). According to Harvey and Allard 2015, there is lot of determinable factors that affects the hiring decision. We once had an issue in our organization about hiring a candidate. The candidate had great background in marketing but was not good at accounting. That is why the human resources team thought of comprising the candidate, as he did not fulfill the criteria of the organization. The course assisted me to realize that assessing the candidate with interview procedure is important. In our organiza tion, we have three steps hiring process. First we take an assessment test, the assessment test is important to discern the capability of the employees. Recruitment is the procedure through which an organization determines whether the candidate is suitable for the post or not. Earlier our organization did not have training sessions but inexperienced candidates faced problems understanding their responsibilities and duties that they have to perform. That is why as a human resources manager I recommended that the organization should have training sessions for the new entrants and where they should be trained by the trainers who will brief them about their role and organizational goals. In the meeting, the members argued that training sessions are time consuming and it also means investment of lot of money. But the department of human resources assured them that training will increase the performance level of the employees and help them to work more efficiently. The marketing course th at I attended helped me greatly to acknowledge the role and power of the human resources in the organization. The course delineated that training is a significant part of recruitment because every organization is different. Selecting a suitable candidate and providing them, proper training is necessary. Understanding the vitality of workforce diversity is the primary responsibility of the human resources. There are predominant diversity affairs that were always present in the workplace. Gender inequality is one of them. While studying management, the lecturer gave us lectures on different workforce related issues that human resources management confronts in an organization. Australia is a multi cultural country and it is not unusual that the organizations of Australia also supports cross-cultural workforce. The personnel policy from recruiting to promotions and increments are based on the performances of the employee. While working, I understood that providing equal rights to every employee is important. To avoid gender, age and religion based discriminatory issues; I encouraged the organization to divide the workforce in teams so that each of them can work together for the betterment of the organization. Earlier promotion was given to the candidates who are associated for with the organization for longer time. This practice raised many questions, as the approach was not justified to assess the capability of an employee. I appealed to the board members of the organization that the promotion should be given to the candidate who has been able to impress the organization with his or her performance level. The organization that I work in follows traditional values. At first, they negotiated with me about my perspective but finally with the help of my department I was able to persuade them to change their age-old notion. The course that I attended really assisted me to evaluate and analyze the environment of an organization and make necessary strategic implementati on to upgrade the performance of the organization. Reflective journal Human resources management comprises of work force planning and developmental planning related to organization (McCarthy et al. 2013). In my course, I was illuminated about the ethical value that this management requires since it deals with human issues. It is essential for an organization to have proper ethical rules and regulations that will solve the human issues. Employees are valuable assets of the organization. It is the duty of the human resources management to protect their rights and establish their well-being (Cahill et al. 2015). Issues like discrimination, unfair employment and sexual harassment can ruin company reputation. Giving credits and appraisals to the employees can also provide views whether the organizations have ethical values or not. While working with the organization, I got the opportunity to practically implement my learning and provide the organization with necessary ideas that helped me to improvise the ethical values that structure the human resources de partment of the organization. I guided the organization that employees should be informed about the codes of ethics in their training sessions. I also guided the department of human resources that if supervisors or managers are chosen as a trainer, then they need to have proper knowledge in ethical values of the organization so that they can guide the employees properly. This way they will be aware about their rights and restrictions in the organization. Mentoring and guiding the employees through interaction is the best way to avoid workplace conflicts (Phillips 2013). Human resources management studies guided me not to violate my position by using the power of the position for personal or financial gain. In the past, our organization has faced problems, as the confidential information of the organization was once comprised. It is the responsibility of the department of the human resources management to safeguard confidential data of the enterprise. As per Aswathappa 2013, assistin g the organization towards its goal is the most important duty of the human resources department. I thoroughly believe that quality and productivity of the organization depends on the coordinating and motivating the staffs. To increase productivity, I suggested that the company should set targets for the employees and at the end of the month based on their performance levels appraisal will be presented. Human resources department is an important part of an organization. That is why it is important that the human resources executives are educated and properly trained. As a human resources manager, I believe in choosing my staffs wisely. I think assessing the cultural activities of the organization and implementing strategy to improve the skills of the employee for better productivity is important. While recruiting, the organization can embrace more proactive perspective (Knowles, Holton III and Swanson 2014). Job analysis need to be done to collect information about the job profile o f the employee. I recommended my organization that basic skills and capacity of an employee should be assessed. Training programs should be set based on that assessment (Ulrich 2013). In theories, I studied that labor relation is an indispensable part in assessing organizational behavior. The employee should always have the assurance that their jobs are secured. Unionization should not be supported because our organization once confronted problems associated with a union that is why I proposed that company should have guidelines to protect their cause. The guidance that I received from my course really helped me to improvise the strategies of the organizations I am working with right now. Turning a normal car into a Rice Burner is just plain dumb. Of course, most of the modifications done by ricer do not actually increase the performance of his car, but rather, they try to give the appearance of performance. Many of the things they do to their cars to make them faster actually hurt the performance. What sets apart a Ricer from someone who pimps out a car to make it fast is that they are more concerned with the image of speed than they are about actual performace. Most of the aftermarked parts a ricer would add to his car include are, a fart can, huge spoiler, bodykit, stickers, flashy paintjob, and many lights. A fart can or performace exhaust, as a ricer would call it, added to a car does absolutely nothing to increase the performace in anyway, but rather makes the car sound like a farting weedwacker. Most ricers will have huge spoilers on there cars. A spoiler on the rear trunk does nothing on a front wheel drive car, if they wanted a functional spoiler they would have put it on the hood of the car. But no matter how thoroughly that network was armored or protected, its switches and wiring would always be vulnerable to the impact of atomic bombs. A nuclear attack would reduce any conceivable network to tatters. And how would the network itself be commanded and controlled? Any central authority, any network central citadel, would be an obvious and immediate target for an enemy missile. RAND mulled over this grim puzzle in deep military secrecy, and arrived at a daring solution. The network would have no central authority. The Corporal Punishment

Corporal punishment is a very complex and controversial topic. It's hard to decide what is right and what is wrong when discussing how to discipline children. For those of you who are not familiar with the term corporal punishment it is the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction or control of the child's behavior. I read a lot of definitions, but I think Murray Straus summed it up the best with that definition. Corporal punishment is sometimes called spanking. The more common types of corporal punishment are spanking, grabbing or shoving, and hitting a child with objects such as a hair brush, belt, or paddle (Straus, 4-5). In the following paragraphs such things as who uses corporal punishment, the short long term effects of corporal, and things to do instead of using corporal punishment will be discussed. To my surprise many people do in fact use corporal punishment. Many people believe that when their child†s behavior gets out of control that the only way to restore order is to paddle the ones that are causing problems. In the Gallup Monthly Poll of 1000 randomly selected American parents, â€Å"Over half of the parents said they administered minor physical punishment during the past year, while 22 percent said they use severe physical punishment. â€Å"(Daro 519). This physical punishment does not work as effectively as other types of punishment and strictly speaking is illegal. â€Å"It is much better to choose a punishment that will fit the action, for example if a child has a fight over the TV, take away TV privileges. Corporal punishment is usually administered when the parent is being brash and hasn't had time to cool down from the child's misbehavior. † (Maccoby 19). Recently the â€Å"No hitting-use words to express you feelings† method has been thought to resolve problems, but many people don't believe it is effective and they result to other methods, such as corporal punishment. A study conducted by Gelles in 1989 found that 84 per cent of 1,470 adults agreed that â€Å"It is sometimes necessary to discipline a child with a hard spanking. † (20). What does this mean? It means that there are a lot of people out there who are using corporal punishment and that might be causing psychological problems within their children and may not even recognize it (Gelles 23). If you were to talk to parents and children of earlier generations you wouldn't believe the number of parents who spanked their children. Most parents spank their children because they believe it was for their own good (Straus 3). Research up to 1985 shows that more than 90% of parents used corporal punishment on toddlers and more than half continued to use it during the early teen years. Even this high figure represents a decrease from 99% in the 1950s and 97% in 1975. There have been further decreases since 1985, but almost all children continue to experience corporal punishment (White 12). These high prevalence rates and the high rates of approval of spanking may be interpreted as an indication that parents spank with little thought of possible side effects, such as later aggression and are learning to control this as time goes on (Daro 528). Talking with my parents and grandparents they said children back then were different. They respected their parents and followed directions. So why the change? Issues such as society, the increase in violence on TV, and the number of hours people spend watching TV may be leading factors in the change in children†s behavior. Now a day, there are children who enjoy being spanked because even though it was painful, it is quick and they didn't have to do any extra chores (Chmelynski 51). Out of the seven or eight articles I read there was only one that mentioned corporal punishment as a positive reinforcement. Most of the articles stated that it was either abuse or ineffective. Stuart Tolman, the Murtaugh school board chairman in Illonois, states that â€Å"Corporal punishment is effective†. He adopted corporal punishment to answer parent†s request of better discipline. He thinks, â€Å"suspensions just give kids a holiday. † He also said since they have been using corporal punishment there has been no suspensions that year (Chmelynski 51). Just because one out of seven or eight articles says that corporal punishment does work, does that mean it really does work? Of course not. Joy Cain states, â€Å"Abusing children directly affects their performance in school. â€Å"(101). According to a study published in Social Work Research, students who are abused consistently do worse on â€Å"CAT standardized tests, grade point averages, proportion who dropped out when eligible, mean annual absences, proportion of possible behavior problems and retention, and proportion with delinquency complaints† (Eron 172). Spanking a child will not stop them from doing the same thing later in life. According to research conducted, â€Å"Children who have been slapped or hit are usually so overwhelmed with anger and hurt feelings that they cannot remember what they were punished for. According to Susan Smith, the lesson that is being taught to a child that is being hit is that hitting is a solution to solving problems(1). Believe it or not there are short term and long term effects to corporal punishment. Obviously the short-term effect would be the stopping of the inappropriate behavior, but the long-term effect might not be so obvious. To determine definite results of long-term effects, many studies have to be conducted and many conclusions have to be drawn. Unfortunately, no types of studies have been done. The reason for this is that there would have to be an experimental group that would have to use corporal punishment and since many social scientists believe that harm will result in such studies, they don't want to conduct them. Even though there have been no studies reported, there have been some theories that have been supported by some research. These findings show that the more corporal punishment, the higher the rate of undesirable behaviors or thought later in life, such things as delinquency, approval of violence, alienation, depression, and lower earnings (Straus 196). Straus also believes that victims of corporal punishment have an increased chance of worse behavior and other problems, including impaired learning and as mentioned before, delinquency; and later in life, depression, child abuse, wife beating, and other crimes† (Straus 4). Although cultural norms supporting corporal punishment of children may be changing, there is abundant evidence that these norms are deeply rooted and pervasive (Yarrow 21). One of the most fundamental ways in which cultural norms supporting corporal punishment are expressed is in the Criminal law on assault. In every state of the U. S. hitting a child for purposes of correction or control is exempt from the crime of assault, usually with the proviso that it is limited to â€Å"reasonable force. † In practice, that includes the right to hit with belts and paddles, provided the child is not injured (Straus 12). In the 1960s every state in the United States passed legislation designed to protect children from physical abuse and to provide services for abused children. Ironically, in order to garner sufficient votes to pass the child abuse laws, it was typically necessary to include a provision declaring that parents continued to have the right to use corporal punishment. As a result, legislation intended to protect children from physical abuse contained provisions that further legitimated a practice that increases the risk of physical abuse (Giles 171). When reading about corporal punishment it is critical to know that it is an ethic and moral question to as if corporal punishment is right or wrong. It all comes down to what you believe in. It would be nice if everyone got along and didn't hit one another, but in reality everyone is not like that. Something can be done though to prevent the use of corporal punishment. Other types of discipline, without raising a hand to a child, can be taught and used by many parents. It may seem a lot easier to spank and be done, but here are some suggestions that are being used today: 1. Take a deep breath and remember you are the adult. 2. Count to twenty while you pressing your lips together tightly. 3. Go outside or take a walk. Get yourself away from the situation and clear your head (Smith 2). 4. Keep expectations in line with the child's age. 5. Think ahead, and anticipate problems and ways of avoiding them. 6. Offer choices. Don't bark commands. 7. Be consistent. 8. Follow through with consequence, not punishments. (Cain 101). Other steps can be taken to prevent the use of corporal punishment on children. Parents can create a home where it's easier for a child to be well behaved and productive, and where they are less tempted to resort to spanking (Larzelere 30). They can be clear that they are the parents who ultimately set the limits and enforce the rules. One step to doing this would be to teach children how to talk about their feelings, rather than act them out in misbehavior. Next, parents should try to anticipate stressful situations and develop ways of handling them before the child's behavior gets out of control. As long as parents monitor their own levels of anger and are aware of what may trigger angry responses, they can be patient and in control. Last, parents have to be consistent in their parenting, so that all confusion can be stopped between what punishments will be like, so that children can know what to expect if they disobey their parents (White 14). Spanking and other forms of physical punishment teach children that it is all right to hit people who are smaller and weaker. Physical punishment causes parents to lose an opportunity to teach children alternative behaviors, which are socially acceptable. Its use sometimes leads to physical abuse and it contributes to the cycle of child abuse. Other means of discipline are available to parents including time-out, rule setting, and consequences for misbehavior, explaining and reasoning and praise for good behavior. â€Å"Corporal punishment may provide immediate results, but it doesn't teach self-discipline. It teaches that aggression is the way to solve problems and that big people can bully little people† (Cain 121). Corporal punishment is wrong. It may cause problems in the future for the child being hit, and it is not fair to the child. With so many other choices, corporal punishment should be laid to rest.
